Bosquejo
I. Jesús anuncia su sufrimiento y muerte.
II. Los discípulos responden buscando posición y privilegio.
III.

be the greatest dice que si quieres ser el más grande you must be a slave to all tenés que ser esclavo de todos we have a pattern that happens here in Mark hay un patrón que ocurre en Marcos and we're going to recap just a little bit so that we can see it clearly in chapter 10 verse 15 Jesus tells the people that you need to become like these babies to get into the kingdom of heaven in 1031 he says the first shall be last and the last shall be first and then when we get to our text that we're looking at today in 43 and 44 he says whoever wishes to be great must be a servant but to be first you have to be a slave to all the pattern is getting increasingly more sacrificial and difficult the pattern is getting increasingly more sacrificial and difficult the word there in verse 43 the word there in verse 43 the Greek word is diákonos it's the word for servant where we get the name deacon and what Jesus says there is you are a servant of one but while the next word for slave is doulos and so there he says you must be a slave to all so to be great you are
a servant of one but to be the first of all of them you are a slave of everyone and so as we look at Mark here not only do we have a pattern in what Jesus is telling the apostles but we also see a pattern in the way that he tells them in chapter 8 of verse 29 we see a pivotal point in Mark's gospel up until that verse in Mark's gospel what we have seen is just a historical account of Jesus what he has done and where he has gone and so there in verse 29 Christ starts to reveal his true identity when he asks the apostles a question and he says who do you say that I am and Peter by divine intervention answers correctly when he says you are the Christ and so it's at that point that Christ starts to explain what first must happen to him this is where he starts to teach of the passion his journey of going up to the cross and when he explains this Peter actually rebukes him and then after that Jesus teaches the values of the kingdom and so what we see is Jesus says to come to me he must deny himself he tells them to take up his cross and follow
Christ for one to save his life he must lose it but the one who loses his life for Christ will save it and that's when he says what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul and then he continues on from there so the pattern we see is Jesus predicts the passion there's a response from the disciples and then Jesus gives instructions to the disciples and so we see that pattern happen over and over again we see the same thing again there in chapter 9 verse 31 here is a time when he is teaching the apostles and in verse 31 he predicts the passion that's coming verse 31 says for he was teaching his disciples and telling them the son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men and they will kill him and when he has been killed he will rise three days later and then after that what was the disciples response they begin to argue over who was going to be first the greatest and so then with our pattern we see then Jesus instructs them about the values of the kingdom and so now we get back here in chapter 10 to our text for today and we see the third prediction
of the passion that Jesus gives and just as expected from the experience and the pattern the disciples don't handle themselves well with this information and so in verse 32 it says they were on the road going up to Jerusalem and Jesus was walking ahead of them and they were amazed and those who followed were fearful and again he took the twelve aside and began to tell them of what was going to happen to him so here's the first point in our pattern Jesus tells them what is about to happen he's following the pattern that had been presented before us now what we see in verse 33 is that they are going up to Jerusalem he says behold we are going up to Jerusalem and the son of man will be delivered to the chief priests and the scribes and they will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles see for the Israelites these pilgrimages were a routine journey they were on their way to the Passover this is something they did every year but Jesus is saying this will be no routine journey for him this one is going to be different what he is saying is that he is going up to Jerusalem to worship by the offering of
himself because as the good shepherd he is leading his sheep and he is going to Jerusalem to lay down his life for the sheep and he also has continuously pointed out the significance of his death we see this in verse 34 each account that he is given of the passion has ended with him saying that three days later he will rise again see it's important for us to remember that the death on the cross is meaningless unless there is a resurrection with all three of the synoptic gospels especially here in Mark we see the story move rapidly through Jesus' ministry to get to the death of Christ and then it's like the author stops and focuses on that see the focus is on the death of Christ on the cross and the resurrection and the significance of that not as an example or a martyr but as the substitute Christ says he will be delivered up by Judas I'm sorry he will be delivered up but it will be by the way of Judas sorry then there is a progression that we see from that point it goes from Judas to the Sanhedrin and then to Pilate and the soldiers see this word for delivered is the same word that Paul uses to explain his
theology of what happened in the giving of Jesus by God the Father and we see that in Romans 8.32 he says he who did not spare his own son but delivered him over for us all how will he not with him freely give us all things and then in Romans 4.25 we see similar action and so it's true that he was delivered by Judas in the Sanhedrin and by Pilate and the soldiers it's true that he was delivered for or because of our transgressions but ultimately what we see is that behind that delivery is the delivery of God the Father this doesn't forgive the reality of what is of what each of these people are doing it doesn't stop the exercise of their will that happens no anula el ejercicio de su voluntad de lo que está pasando but in the exercising of their will it proves the purpose of God the Father pero al ejercer su voluntad se comprueba el propósito de Dios el Padre that his purpose from the beginning of time was to offer up his son for the atonement of our sins and so when we get back here to our text we see in verse 34 that all of the jealousy all of the anger all of the hatred was
and is real in that the purpose of God came through because he was delivered up for us now you would think that the disciples hearing this would fall on their face in worship but what we see instead is that they are concerned of what Jesus can do for them and our second point as we're following along the pattern in our text here is that we see the disciples response and so in verse 35 and 37 it says James and John the two sons of Zebedee came to Jesus saying teacher we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you and he said to them what do you want me to do for you they said to him grant that we may sit one on your right and one on your left in your glory see this is incredible to me imagine the scene that is set before us Jesus says Jesus says I'm going up to Jerusalem I'll be taken captive tortured and humiliated and then killed and then I'm going to be resurrected and then he waits for the disciples response and two of his key guys say we want you to do something for us and so Jesus being the servant that he is he says what do you want to
do and they say we want the best seats in the house when you come to glory Jesus barely gets the words out of his mouth that he will suffer and die a horrible death and they are asking for favors of him and so Jesus tells them you have no idea what you're asking and so in verse 38 it says but Jesus said to them you do not know what you are asking are you able to drink the cup that I drink or to be baptized with the baptism which I am baptized and their response is well yeah and the beginning of 39 what we see is not only did they not fully understand what Jesus was saying but they don't fully have knowledge of themselves see these two things were essential for them and they are essential for us just like when the rich young ruler came to Jesus they need to understand who Jesus was and who they are and so then we see Jesus' response to them and the rest of verse 39 and 40 and Jesus said to them the cup that I drink you shall drink you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized but to sit on my right or on my left that is not
mine to give but it is for those for whom it has been prepared he says you'll be persecuted and die but that doesn't secure you a better place in the kingdom because that has already been assigned to someone that's the father's decision and who is that position for we're not told exactly we're given a little bit of a hint though in verse 31 when Christ says but many who are first will be last and the last will be first in other words some of the people that we don't think should be in heaven will probably be there and then there's ones that most likely we think will be there and some of them we won't see in heaven but this is all we're told about it Christ defers this to the father because the father is the one making that appointment and see once again you would think with the pattern that the disciples would have learned this by now but in verse 41 it says they were indignant they haven't learned anything yet here they are the future of the church Christ's closest his core group the ones who are about to establish the kingdom of God on earth and they still don't get it and so then we get to our third and
final point here and this is where they get the word of guidance from Jesus for whoever wants to become great and so in verse 42 he says what you're doing is what the Gentiles do but that's not right that's not what we're supposed to do in 43 and 44 he says you are supposed to be different in verse 43 it says but it is not this way among you but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all he says I just explained how I'm going to lay down my life for you and you follow up with a question about your status he says that's what the world does the people who aren't believers he says but it's not this way among you this is not the way that you are supposed to act as believers because what we see is in the service that your greatness is displayed the honor is found in the giving of the service not in the receiving of the service and we see the ultimate culmination of this in verse 45 he says for even the son of man did not come to serve not come to be served but to serve and to
give his life as a ransom for many so what do we do with this individually this tends to confront the pride that comes up in our heart this attacks a culture that we live in that is a culture that's preoccupied with self with self esteem with status with putting value on material things and this is what we are in this is what we are in the middle of as followers of Jesus this is what the culture does yet Christ says but it is not this way among you and how do we see this affect us as a church see there can be a sense of pride of being the mainstream being a church that seems popular on on a local level as well as a universal level but is this what we're meant to be as a church is this being effective as a church and by effective I don't mean being entertaining and filling seats in a church building but being effective in spreading the gospel we as Christians and as a church we don't have a responsibility to gain status to seek success for the world to see in fact Christ says it's the total opposite of that when he says there in verse 44 that whoever wishes to be first among you
shall be slave of all does this challenge you it does me see it tends to go in the face of everything that we see we see this in America as far as status goes do y'all see it here in Argentina it's no wonder that the Christians from China today I've heard them say that their greatest mission field is the United States of America this is a people that is getting locked up and killed just for being Christians while we complain about our place in society and so who really has that right is there hope for us though I would say yes because see John who asked this of Jesus when he was walking up to Jerusalem he's the one that asked this very question he finally figured it out because see 60 years later when he wrote his first letter of 1 John what he says in 1 John 316 is that we know love by this that he laid down his life for us and this is the important part and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren now remember this was the same John that was asking for the good seats when they got to glory and so this is a sign of a man who has matured in his
Christian walk when you figure out that laying down your life for others for the sake of the gospel that's how you live more like Christ if you'll join me in prayer we'll close forgive us father for our desires to have status the desires to be at the top for ambition God we relate to the apostles this passage impacts us because this is an idea that's not far from us please have mercy on us and help us be more conformed to the image of your son God help us walk more like him father help us to be grateful for the things that Christ has done for us help us to show that in obedience to you in our service to your church to your body in our work of spreading the gospel around the world God you are the one who brings people to your kingdom but you have chosen it to do it through us broken and sinful people and God we just ask that as we walk that we would be faithful to what you have given us and that what we would say and do would be glorifying and honoring to you it is in your son's name that we pray amen Amén.
