You know, there are many familiar faces here, and it's really a joy to be back with you today. This time's really a great joy because my wife Kathleen is here. That makes me very happy. Eso me hace muy feliz. So we've been married this year 23 years. Este año cumplimos 23 años de casados. And we have three kids. Y tenemos tres hijos. The two boys are Jacob and Brooks. Los dos muchachos son Brooks y Jacob. They are 20 and 18. Y ellos tienen 18 y 20 años.
And they will both, Lord willing, be here in October. So you will have an opportunity to give them a hard time. We have one daughter, Allison. Y tenemos una hija, Allison. And she is 16. Y tiene 16 años. Enrique has told me about what you're studying. And so we are going to try to continue that theme today in Titus chapter 1.
Today we're going to look at what the pastors are and how they relate to the flock. That they are guardians of sound doctrine. Son guardianes de la sana doctrina. And guardians of the flock. Y guardianes del rebaño. Now in the book of Titus. En el libro de Tito. It is a letter written by Paul to his good buddy Titus. Paul met him on his second missionary journey and led him to the Lord. They did extensive ministry together in multiple locations.
And as they traveled to the area, to the island of Crete. Like other places, Paul had very limited time to spend there. So as it came time for Paul to move on from Crete. The decision was made to leave Titus there. That's where we pick up in Titus chapter 1 verses 5 through 9.
So after Paul set in order the greeting at the beginning before this paragraph, Tras el saludo de Pablo al comienzo de la carta, He jumps right into the heart of what he's writing about. And the first thing he tells Titus Y lo primero que él le dice a Tito Is to remember why he left him in Crete. It was to accomplish two things. First, set in order what remains.
And second, appoint elders in every city. So at the end of the verse, he indicates that this is not new information. It's more of a reminder than brand new information. So I want to share a little bit about the history of how the gospel got to Crete. Because it will help us understand why this instruction.
At the birth of the church, we see a verse in verse 11. And it talks about how the Cretians were there. Y dice que los cretenses estaban ahí. It says that the Cretians and the Arabs, they were there to hear them in their own tongues. They heard the mighty deeds of God. Escucharon las obras poderosas de Dios. So, no doubt, some of those men that were converted on that day.
They took the gospel back to their island. Regresaron con el Evangelio a su isla. They shared it with those that they knew. Lo compartieron con los que lo conocían. And other people became believers in Crete. Y otras personas conocieron entonces el Evangelio. See, Crete was a island close to Greece. So, it had a lot of Greek influence and Roman influence. So, some of those that were saved started forming churches.
They were battling things from their culture. Tenían cuestiones de su cultura. And so, Paul writes a letter to help encourage and strengthen them. He writes it to Titus, the pastor that is there that he discipled and he loved. And the first thing we saw there in verse 5. He gives them a couple of instructions as he goes into verse 6.
The first thing being set in order. La primera es ordenar. So, that word to set in order is a very important word. Because when we understand its context in that day, it helps us understand what he's instructing him with. The phrase set in order is a word where we get our word, orthodontics.
And then, as we know, an orthodontist will take our crooked teeth and make them straight. A long time ago, it was also used in relation to your bones. Curved bones to be made straight or broken bones to be made straight. So, we get the idea of an orthopedic doctor. Así que, a medida que Pablo instruye a Tito, the young pastor is supposed to set straight these things.
There are certain doctrines and practices in the church that need to be straightened out. We don't have time today to get into all the details Hoy no tenemos tiempo para entrar en todos los detalles Of exactly what those doctrines are Exactamente de qué eran estas doctrinas But we see here that the task is given to Titus to straighten them out. Pero vemos la tarea que es dada a Tito de corregirlas, de enderezarlas So, he's going to set those things in order Él tiene que poner estas cosas en orden But then second, he's going to appoint elders in every city Y lo segundo que tiene que hacer es nombrar ancianos en cada ciudad And so it's also important to understand the word appoint Por eso también es importante que entendamos la palabra nombrar Because it means putting someone in a place of authority Porque significa poner a alguien en una posición de autoridad It is a word that is used many times today In the phrase Put someone in
charge Hoy en día nosotros utilizamos mucho esa palabra Para decir De poner a alguien a cargo de algo So when Enrique travels and can't preach on a Sunday Cuando Enrique viaja y no puede predicar un domingo He would put someone in charge of preaching Él va a poner a alguien a cargo de predicación And then he continues to do that with other tasks Y continúa haciendo eso con otras tareas también But we understand the appointment of someone to be in that place Nosotros entendemos que el nombramiento de poner a alguien en ese lugar Comes with a certain authority to instruct and shepherd Viene con cierta
autoridad e instrucción para pastorear So when he says here to appoint elders in every city Por lo tanto cuando él acá dice de poner ancianos en cada iglesia He's talking about put men in charge that can shepherd and instruct Está hablando de poner hombres a cargo que puedan instruir y pastorear And in the text he calls them elders Y en el texto él los llama ancianos So as Paul instructs these things and tells this young pastor Timothy, Titus Mientras Pablo instruye a Tito We're going to see a man developed here as a leader of the church Vamos a ver cómo es el desarrollo de un hombre para ser líder de la iglesia These men are to have the best character Tienen que tener el mejor character Tienen que ser mayores en la fe Tienen que ser mayores en la fe Y usualmente eso implica ser mayores en la edad también The idea is experience in life La idea es que tengan experiencia en la vida It's really focused on their character and ability to teach Está enfocado en su carácter y en su habilidad para enseñar And really the Bible uses a couple of terms for these men La Biblia utiliza diferentes términos para referirse a estos hombres One phrase, one word is elder, the
other is overseer Una de las palabras es anciano y la otra es supervisor And in Acts chapter 20 he gives an actionable term to these men Pablo en Hechos capítulo 20 les otorga ahora un título práctico They are to pastor the flock of God Tienen que pastorear el rebaño de Dios Also in Ephesians 4 he uses something similar But he combines another word with that word pastor Y él combina otra palabra con la palabra pastor And it makes it pastor teacher Y tenemos la pastor maestro In 1 Peter 5 he goes through and he explains a work that they are to do Y en 1 Pedro 5 él va a través de todo esto y muestra cuál es el trabajo que tienen que hacer He commands them to shepherd the flock of God among you Exercising oversight Ejercitando la supervisión So here Paul instructs Titus Acá Pablo instruye a Tito To put pastors in charge of each church De poner pastores a cargo de cada iglesia In each city En cada ciudad So the people are a sheep with a shepherd Porque los creyentes Para que no sean ovejas sin pastor So he's instructing them to be faithful stewards Whose job is to care for the flock of God Les está instruyendo a nombrar mayordomos
fieles Cuya labor es cuidar el rebaño de Dios And to do so they must address error Y para hacer eso ellos tienen que corregir el error And they will stand in a place to protect the sheep Y ellos van a estar parados en un lugar para proteger el rebaño The next logical question would be La próxima pregunta lógica será So who are these men? ¿Quiénes son estos hombres? What type of a man would this be? And if you continue on and look at the next verse You see a list of qualifications In fact if you remember the scripture reading from 1 Timothy 3 There's many similarities So he clarifies exactly what type of a man should be an elder And in verse 6 we see three items to pay attention to In el versículo 6 nosotros vemos tres items a los cuales tenemos que prestar atención These men must be above reproach Estos hombres deben estar más allá de todo reproche And he applies it to the home, the domestic place Y ahora lo aplica a un punto doméstico en el hogar He applies
it to his wife and his kids Y lo aplica a su esposa y sus hijos And if he's going to be above reproach Entonces si va a ser más allá de reproche The idea is, is that in the public eye Y la idea es que desde una perspectiva pública He is seen as blameless Él está visto como irreprechable, sin falta People can't develop a list of things against him La gente no puede escribir una lista de cosas en contra de él He's not presented as guilty before the people No está siendo presentado como culpable de algo delante de la gente Now think about your relationship with Christ Piensa en tu relación con Dios Because you're joined with Christ Porque vos estás unido a Cristo At the end of time Al final del tiempo You stand before the judge Vas a estar delante del juez Blameless Sin ningún tipo de culpa That's how this man should look to the people around him Y así es como estos hombres deben lucir A las personas que están alrededor de ellos He lives a life that is blameless Él vive una vida que es irreprochable No está hablando de que no tiene pecado O que es perfecto But in relationship to other people Pero en su relación con otras
personas There's not spiritual or moral accusations against them No hay acusaciones espirituales o morales contra él So specifically it says The husband of one wife Especificamente dice el texto Marido de una sola mujer He is blameless in that area Él es irreprochable en esa área That term really means The one woman man Ese término realmente significa Un hombre de una sola mujer And it's a reference to his dedication to his wife Y es una referencia a su dedicación a su esposa It's a testimony to his sexual purity Es un testimonio de su pureza sexual The other term is to have faithful children El otro término
tiene que ver con tener hijos fieles And two things go along with this phrase Y estas dos ideas acompañan esta frase One is that if he's not able to raise his kids and care for them Una es que si él no puede cuidar a su esposa y criar a sus hijos Why would he be put in charge of a bigger flock to care for Cómo va a ponerse a cargo de cuidar a un rebaño más grande He must be faithful with the litter Little before he stewards more Debe ser fiel en lo poco antes de que pueda administrar más And then second Y segundo lugar Is to really find out how qualified someone is to lead in the church Y para determinar realmente cuán calificado está alguien para dirigir a la iglesia Look how faithful he is at home Mira que tan fiel es en casa In fact it takes it a little bit further in the text And it says Si vamos un poquito más adelante en el texto dice Que la disipación no debe caracterizar a estos chicos Y la palabra disipación está pegada a Participating in drunken parties Participar en borracheras y fiestas Y la palabra rebelde está después de eso Meaning an undisciplined, disobedient kid Que significa un niño indisciplinado y
desobediente So a kid that would not submit to authority Que no se niega a someterse a la autoridad So two things that they should not be Entonces Two things that they should not be Dos cosas que ellos no deben ser Not living a wild life No vivir una vida desenfrenada And a disordered life that's disrespectful to authority Y una vida desordenada que es irrespetuosa a la autoridad You want to have faithful, obedient children Vos querés tener hijos fieles y obedientes So there's a bit of a note on this subject as well Hay una pequeña nota sobre este tema One is that we're talking about children,
not adults Estamos hablando sobre niños, no adultos At some point the kids are responsible for their own selves When they become adults En algún punto los niños empiezan a ser responsables de sí mismos Cuando se convierten en adultos And the second is we're not talking about spiritual condition Y lo segundo es que no estamos hablando de su condición espiritual We're talking about the man's ability to care for his kids and raise them properly Estamos hablando de una capacidad humana del hombre de poder criar a sus hijos So here in verse 6 we see a man En versículo 6 nosotros vemos un hombre That would be
an elder is to be publicly blameless Que ser un anciano es ser públicamente irreprochable A faithful husband Un esposo fiel And a faithful father producing good kids Verse 7 As we look at it In the following list That's the list that starts looking a lot like 1 Timothy 3 He's going to start with a list of things that this man should not be characterized as Verán empieza por una lista de cosas que no deberían caracterizar a este hombre He also uses the term overseer Y también utiliza el término supervisores Which we explained before Is elder, pastor, overseer the same person Para referirse como dijimos antes
Ya sea ancianos o pastores Se refiere a la misma persona But notice what he starts this list with Ah, pero miren con lo que empieza esta lista The words beyond reproach La palabra irreprochable So just like verse 6 Así como en el versículo 6 With domestic qualifications He should be above reproach Como las calificaciones domésticas Tienen que ser irreprochables Here in verse 7 The same thing applies to his private personal life Y en versículo 7 La misma palabra aplica para su vida personal So we want to jump into this list And look at each of these quickly Vamos a comenzar a ver esta lista rapidamente
This man is going to give an account to the Lord For what he does Este hombre va a dar cuenta al Señor por lo que hace If he's an elder He has to answer to the Lord For his flock Si él es un anciano Él tiene que rendir cuentas al Señor Por su rebaño And how he cared for them Y como ha cuidado de ellos Kind of like Matthew 25 With the parable of the talents Así como en Mateo capítulo 25 Con la parábola de los talentos So he's going to set straight These are not the things We want to see in this man Entonces Pablo está mostrando Bueno estas son las cosas Que no queremos ver en este hombre First they cannot be self-willed Lo primero es No puede ser no voluntarioso We don't want a man Characterized by pride and arrogance No queremos un hombre obstinado Que se caracteriza por el orgullo y la arrogancia A man that would seek his own will Over the will of his sheep Un hombre que va a buscar su propia voluntad Por encima de lo que es mejor para la iglesia O el rebaño We also don't want a quick tempered man Tampoco queremos un hombre irascible This type of man Doesn't just have occasional outbursts
of anger Este tipo de hombre No solo tiene arrebatos de ira ocasionales But is characterized by a short fuse And jumps to anger easily Sino que se caracteriza por tener mecha corta Y enojarse fácilmente We don't want a man that's addicted to wine No queremos un hombre adicto al vino This describes a man that It's not just he can't have wine He must have wine Este describe un hombre Que no es que Puede tomar vino Sino que necesita tomar vino I mean just picture for the minute That your pastor would be a drunk Picture for a minute That your pastor is a drunk Imaginen por un minuto Que su pastor es un borracho It'd be pretty bad Es bastante mala Because the alcohol will dull the mind Porque el alcohol va a afectar la mente And the point is Is when you drink too much Y el punto es que cuando vos bebes mucho You lose control Perdese el control So this would apply to alcohol Drugs Or anything else That would control your mind You want the pastor or elder To be the one That is controlled by the spirit Not anything else The next is not pugnacious You don't want him to be a fighter He shouldn't stir things up Or create fights
Either with his words Or with his fists Also don't want him To be fond of sordid gain This is one who seeks wealth And financial success At any cost And then in verse 8 He moves And instead of focusing On what he should not be He focuses on what he should be So now in your mind As we go through this list Think of a pastor And what do you want him To be like to you What type of man is a pastor Biblically it should include These things in verse 8 It should be a hospitable man A pastor would give Of his time And his resources To provide practical help And encouragement To anyone in need And it's not just those That are close to him But also strangers He's just that kind of man The other thing here Is that he is loving What is good The pastor would have A controlling desire El pastor debe tener Un deseo dominante Or a strong affection O un profundo afecto For the things that are good And the people that are good For las cosas Y las personas Que son buenas Something that controls His conversations Algo que domina Sus conversaciones Might be Asking the question Debería ser Hacer la pregunta What is best For
the church In this situation Que es lo mejor Para toda la iglesia En esta situación What is best For the sheep Or the people In the church Que es lo mejor Para las ovejas Para las personas En la iglesia But he is seeking After what is good Él está buscando Está persiguiendo Aquello que es bueno Para la iglesia Another one is sensible La siguiente Es sensitivo Sensible So this man Would be sober minded Este es un hombre Sobrio de su mente He does not rush To anger Or fleshly reactions No se deja llevar Por la ira Ni por reacciones Carnales Humanas But he is in control Of what he thinks And does Sino que tiene control De lo que piensa Y hace Next is He is righteous Lo siguiente Es justo This is the idea That he is fair And just Esta es la idea De que él es Es justo He doesn't show Parciality To one group Over the other Que no muestra Parcialidad En favorecer Un grupo Más que al otro He is holy Él es santo He is That means He is genuinely Obedient To God's word Eso significa Que es genuinamente Obediente A la voluntad de Dios He is also Self controlled Y también es Autocontrolado So sin Doesn't control him
Entonces el pecado No lo controla His life Outside Is an example Because of his Heart inside Su vida externa Es un ejemplo Por su vida Interna It's because He submits Himself To the Holy Spirit's Control Es porque Él se somete Al control Del Espíritu Santo There's integrity And there's Accountability Hay integridad Y irresponsabilidad Now earlier I mentioned Ephesians chapter 4 Anteriormente Mencioné Efesios 4 It combines Two aspects Of this man Y combina Dos aspectos De este anciano And it joins Them together And they are Really inseparable Y los une De manera Que son Inseparables He is both A pastor And a teacher Él es un
pastor Y un maestro And here in verse 9 Of Titus 1 Y aquí en el versículo 9 de Tito 1 Paul joins Those with The All that's said Above Those qualifications Pablo añade A todo lo anterior Otra cualificación And he focused On what he Needs to be Earlier Él se enfocó En lo que Debeía ser Antes Now There's a shift Of what he Must do Ahora hay un cambio En lo que Debe hacer And so We're going to see That they are The guardians Of the sheep Y vamos a ver Que ellos son Los guardianes De las ovejas Look there At what verse 9 Says Miren lo que Dice Versículo 9 Reteniendo La palabra Fiel Que es Conforme La enseñanza These men Are not Just to Hold Fast To The church And the building And other Things of the world Estos hombres No deben Aferrarse A Cosas Como La iglesia El edificio Y cosas Terrenales But they are To hold Fast To the Faithful Word Of God Sino Que se Deben Aferrar Fielmente A la palabra Fiel De Dios They are Literally To grasp On And cling To Deben Aferrarse Grasp And cling To the Word Of God In their Life Deben Aferrarse A la palabra De Dios Con toda Su Vida And by That
what I mean Is They are To be In accordance To all That is Said In the Word And that Lines up From what Jesus Taught What the Apostles Have taught Now what Titus Is teaching That will Be given To these Elders To teach And all The way Through history Up until Even today This isn't Anything Original This is The same Thing That's been Taught For years And years And we As we See here In verse Nine The particular Thing That they Are clinging To Is that They Are To be Able To Exhort In Sound Doctrine So the Pastor Is to Strengthen The people Of God In a way That builds Them up In a way Both In knowledge And Obedience They are The ones Who stand On the Whole Truth Of God In order To produce In the Flock A good Understanding Of both What the Scripture Says And the Major Theologies Found In there They are The ones Who stand In the Pulpit Each Sunday To Clarify Systematize And Explain The Word Of God So we Have Correct Understanding Both In our Minds And In our Hearts It's To Protect Us From Some Popular Christian Thinking That Comes Along That In the End Actually Winds Up Being Error It's To Protect You From Going
Too Far In Your Interpretation Of Scripture But Also To Encourage You To Keep Going Till You Get The Full Council Of Scripture They're The Guardians Of Sound Doctrine But It Also Involves The Second Thing There Is To Reprove Those Who Contradict So So just For A Minute Remember We're Talking About Crete The Island Of Crete Influences From Greece And From Rome Things Sneak Into The Church So This Man Must Reprove Those Meaning He Has To Speak Against Them So Part Of The Pastors Job Is To Speak Against Anything Or Anyone Who Contradicts Is Their Job To Protect You Against Doctrines Or Thoughts That Arise And
Seem Innocent But Might Be a Slippery Slope To Bad Theology So With The Greek Influence And The Roman Influence You Can Imagine During The Day There Was A Lot Of Error And So He Was To Set Those Things Straight Straighten Them Out Is Our Day Much Different It's Really Not We Have A Lot Of Things Pushing Into The Church In fact If you Want a Picture Of Titus's Day Look At Verse 10 And 12 Miral Versículo 10 12 Que Dice Versículo 10 Porque Hay Muchos Hombres Rebeldes Habladores Vanos Y Engañadores Mayormente De Los De La Circuncisión Y Versículo 12 Dice Los Cretenses Son Siempre Mentirosos Malas Bestias Y Glotones Perezosos There Were Some Problems Tenían Algunos Problems No But These Men Were There To Guard The Church To Protect The People Of God And That's The Picture Of What Our Elders And Pastors Should Do Today And Then Just In Closing If You Will Turn To Hebrews Chapter 13 In Hebrews Chapter 13 Verse 17 This Is Going To Be A Verse That Is Speaking To You As A Person In The Church But As We Read It I Want You To Think About The Elder Or Pastor That Lead You As Well Pero Mientras Lo Lees Quisiera Que Pienses En El Pastor Los Ancianos
Que Te Lideran Dice Hebreos 13 17 Obedeced A Vuestros Pastores Y Someteos A Ellos Porque Ellos Velan Por Vuestras Almas Como Quienes Han De Dar Cuenta Para Que Lo Hagan Con Alegría Y No Quejándose Porque Esto No Sería Provechoso Para Vos Otros So The Spiritual Condition Of The Flock Is Very Important We Want That For You Individually But We Want That For The Church In General Because You're A Steward Of What God Has Given You So You Have To Answer At The End Times For Your Stewardship But Today We're Talking About The Pastor Or Elder But Today We're Talking Of Pastors And In This Verse We Get A Glimpse That They Must Give An Account As Well They Must Give An Account For Your Spiritual Condition And So There's An Encouragement At The End Of That Verse Let Them Do This With Joy Not With Groaning For It Be Unprofitable To You So I Want To Ask You A Question As We Wrap Up So The Men In The Room In First Timothy It Said If Anyone Aspires To The Office Of Overseer So Men Do You Aspire Hombres In One Man Should Look Like This In reality The Elders Must Look Like This So So If We Examine Our Heart Men Do We Line
Up With The Standard What Do We Need To Do To Submit Ourself To The Lord To Allow Him To Continue To Grow Us Or Maybe There's An Area You Need To Work On And This Is The Opportunity That God Is Giving You To Say Today Will Be The Day I Will Submit That Area Over To Him And Allow Him To Work On My Life Or Maybe For Anyone Here That Doesn't Know The Lord Yet And You See This List Of How Every Man Should Look And You Say I Want To Serve A God Like That Let Me Encourage You To Accept Jesus As Your Savior Today And Allow Him To Develop You To Your Potential Let's Pray Father As We Come Before You After Hearing This Wonderful Text In Your Scriptures We Are Both Encouraged And Convicted None None Of None Of None Of Us Measure Up Like We Should But We Want To Be Who You Have Designed Us To Be As As As We Leave Here And Examine Our Own Hearts Help Us God To Identify The Places You Want Us To Work On Help Us To Submit Those To You And Help Us To Be Faithful In Allowing You To Work On Us That All We Do Might Glorify And Honor You
For We Pray These Things In Christ's Name Amen
